Taxi Drivers, Residents Threaten Demonstration Over Abandoned Elmina Road Project

Taxi drivers and residents from Essaman through to Elmina have issued a stern warning to local authorities, threatening a massive demonstration if a contractor who abandoned a crucial road project is not immediately recalled to the site.

The ultimatum was contained in a press release sighted by VOK Ghana, which serves as a final notice of their planned industrial action.

The affected communities, including areas leading to the Ndoum Sports Stadium, GN Industrial Estate, Pershie, and Bantuma, have endured hazardous road conditions for over three years. The groups state that the contractor vacated the site due to non-payment for work already completed, leaving the road in a dangerous state.

This neglected infrastructure is not only a daily burden for locals but also a key route for tourists traveling to the historic Elmina Castle. The taxi drivers and residents report that they have been “suffering from hazards” as a result of the poor road conditions.

In the notice titled “NOTICE OF IMPENDING DEMONSTRATION,” the coalition expressed their frustration and outlined their demands. They are calling on the District Assembly, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), and the Member of Parliament (MP) to urgently address the situation.

The groups have set a definitive deadline for action. If their demands are not met, they will stage a massive demonstration on Wednesday, September 13, 2023.

As part of the protest action, taxi drivers will not work, effectively grounding their services. The notice also advises that the participation of private and government vehicle owners in the strike is “optional.”
